On February 11, 2025, President Donald Trump met with Jordan's King Abdullah II at the White House to discuss the future of the Gaza Strip. During the meeting, Trump reiterated his proposal for the United States to assume control over Gaza, aiming to transform it into a prosperous economic hub. He envisions redeveloping the area into a tourist destination, often referring to it as the potential "Riviera of the Middle East." This plan includes significant economic development projects, such as constructing hotels and offices.

A central aspect of Trump's proposal involves relocating the current Palestinian residents of Gaza to neighboring countries, primarily Jordan and Egypt. However, this suggestion has been met with substantial resistance. King Abdullah II firmly opposed the displacement of Palestinians, emphasizing Jordan's stance against any such moves. He highlighted the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza without resorting to relocating its population.

Despite the opposition, Trump remains optimistic about garnering support from regional partners. He expressed confidence that Egypt would back his plan and suggested that both Jordan and Egypt might designate land for Palestinian resettlement. In a gesture of goodwill, King Abdullah II agreed to accept 2,000 ill children from Gaza for medical treatment in Jordan but did not commit to broader resettlement initiatives.

The international community has largely criticized Trump's proposal. French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the idea, advocating instead for a political solution to the Gaza situation. Critics have labeled the plan as an attempt at ethnic cleansing, expressing concerns over its legality and ethical implications. Additionally, there are fears that relocating Palestinians could destabilize neighboring countries and exacerbate regional tensions.

In response to the pushback, Trump indicated that he would not withhold aid to Jordan or Egypt if they declined to accept more Gazans, despite previous suggestions to the contrary. He emphasized the role of wealthy regional nations in funding Gaza's reconstruction and dismissed the need for financial expenditures to gain control over the territory.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the international community and regional stakeholders will respond to Trump's controversial proposal for the future of the Gaza Strip.
