On November 24, 2023, Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd by kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes, was reportedly stabbed in a federal prison in Arizona. According to sources, Chauvin was assaulted by another inmate with a sharp object and was seriously injured. After the incident, he was transferred to an outside hospital for treatment, where he reportedly underwent surgery.

The stabbing reportedly happened at around 11:00 AM local time in the recreation yard at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Tucson, where Chauvin was being held. It is unclear whether the inmate who stabbed him had any connection to Chauvin's high-profile case and what the motive behind the attack was.

In response to the attack, the Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate was assaulted at FCI Tucson on the same day, but did not identify the inmate. The agency also stated that the incident is being investigated by its Special Investigations Service, and that both Chauvin and the other inmate have been placed on restrictive housing status pending the outcome of the investigation.

Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter of George Floyd on April 20, 2021, which led to widespread protests against police brutality and systemic racism in the United States. On June 25, 2021, he was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison by a judge in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

After the sentencing, Chauvin was transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and sent to a federal prison in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota. In late November 2021, he was transferred to the U.S. Penitentiary in Lee County, Virginia, before being moved to FCI Tucson in August 2023.

It is still uncertain how this incident will affect Chauvin's current sentence, or whether there will be added penalties for his attacker. We will update as more information becomes available.
